Ninja Move of the Day: Accidentally getting 3rd place

It’s been a while since I posted a Ninja Move, but I figured this one was worthy.

This past Sunday, a bunch of family members, family friends, and I ran the 5K race for Knottsberry Farm’s annual Coaster Run.

I’m not much of a runner, guys. Honestly, I stated running mostly because it takes less time than going to the gym for a weight or bike workout.

However, I found out that when you run in the nice, cool, moonlit evening, you don’t feel as crappy as when you run in the middle of the day in the blaring California sun. I run something like 2-3 times a week, about 2 miles consistently, and I actually have found the release of endorphins is really quite a pleasant post-run experience.

Anyhow, so I got signed up for this run Sunday–and I’ve only done one 5K before in my life, (which I’m still not sure was actually 5K). So I figured, hey, I’ll just do my best, try to get my time under half an hour, and I’ll get to eat a lot afterwards,  which is always nice.

So a gunshot went off, I started running, I weaved in and out of a lot of human obstacles (which was a nice attention diversion), and I decided to push myself the last mile or so. Past the finish line, I was sweaty and very glad it was all over, stuffed some free banana in my face, and went to go check my time on the screens set up (the participants were all given nifty time chips before the race).

This is what I saw:

Women 19-24
Person #1 *Some really fast time*
Person #2 *Another pretty fast time*
My Name–28:19

Hey, that’s a pretty good time. Nice. WAIT–did I just get 3rd place in my age group? Oh, that means I get a plaque with Snoopy and roller coasters on it? Well, that’s pretty cool. I’m not even a hardcore runner.

It happened…and, of course, my family cheered me to embarrassment when the announcer called my name to get my award. But, hey, it feels good to have aNinja move after so long–and not only was the move Ninja, it happened without me even knowing it, making it  especially a Ninja move.

Ninja longboarder

I don’t have anything against skateboarders. Skateboarders are cool. They manage to slide around in a concrete bowl like something in a pinball machine without ruining themselves. Very ninja.

Longboarders are ninja too, but in a different way. We can travel faster. Cracks in the road are not a major concern. And hill bombing is great–as long as the speed wobble doesn’t get too sketchy.

We’re creative. We don’t need a skatepark; any old (empty) school complex will do nicely. Grind-stoppers (those plastic things screwed on concrete ledges to prevent skaters from grinding) can’t stop us. In fact, we prefer to ride up alongside the concrete, jump off the board, run on the ledge, and jump back on.

I went longboarding with my brother and another guy friend the other day. We totally shredded up an elementary school a block or so from my house. Did stuff like skating up to metal rails to vault over. You could say it was “totes awes.”

I wish I had more pictures, but this one shall suffice:
 Longboarding is so ninja.

A Ninja in my closet

Apparently my Ninja is trying to assassinate me. The other night, I opened my closet, and this is what I saw:

Thankfully, I spotted him in time to convince him it would be a bad idea to stick his thumbtack in my jugular.

Airplane Ninja

On Thursday, while I was making my way to my next class between our two campuses, I glanced up at the sky while waiting for the crosswalk, and this is what I saw:

I gaped. “No way.” I got the attention of the random girl standing next to me so she would see it too.

Now, I need to say that I didn’t take the picture above–I didn’t have my camera with me, oh shucks–but this is pretty darn close to what I saw. Just imagine the face a little smushed. With some LA haze.

After the smiley face, the plane began writing letters in the sky as well. My fiction class and I never fully agreed to what he was writing, exactly, but we all agreed the whole deal was fully AWESOME.

Which means Ninja.

‘Tis the season to be Ninja

My roommates and I decided to deck the halls dorm-style to bring about some Christmas cheer. Apparently my Ninja likes Christmas decorating, too.

Tuxedo longboarding Ninja

I haven’t quite yet decided whether this is Ninja or simply awesome, but I’m willing to err on the Ninja side.

Anyhow, the other day, I saw a guy dressed up in a tuxedo-lookin’-suit-type outfit, holding a briefcase…and longboarding down the campus walkway.

It’s like James Bond turned college-skater-dude.

I’m willing to say that makes a Ninja Move of the Day.

Dining Hall Ninja

As I was eating in the dining hall the other day, I saw this girl walking out carrying a few items, among them a shoe box she held close to her.

At a second glance, I noticed that she had filled the shoe box with bananas and apples from the fruit section of the dining hall.

Sweet ninja moves, college style.
